My lab and I are interested in the evolution of plant morphology. Lab projects include evolution of plant architecture in grasses (Poaceae), developmental genetics of domestication events in foxtail millet and other grasses, and evolution of fruit shape and of seed oils in Paysonia and related mustard species (Brassicaceae). We use phylogenetic, quantitative genetic, developmental genetic, developmental morphological, and, increasingly, phenomic and digital analysis techniques in these analyses.

Plant Biology, BOT 1404, every fall semester

Molecular Phylogenetic Analysis, BOT 5553, spring semesters of odd-numbered years. This class uses DNA and protein data to construct phylogenies to examine species relationships, gene evolution, biogeography, and morphological evolution. It covers issues of aligning sequences, choosing evolutionary models, and constructing phylogenies, using all types of analysis. Classes consist of lecture, discussion, and computer labs, and all students are required to do a major project that integrates all aspects of the course in the pursuit of their own research questions.
